Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed Alison Shaloe about her life and career, and her new book, Baby Talk To Me, with spirit baby messages to empower women on their journeys through the experiences of motherhood.
Tell me a bit about who you are.
I am a midwife, lactation consultant, tongue tie practitioner, reiki healer and spirit baby intuitive. I am also able to communicate with babies before conception, in pregnancy, birth, postnatally and after pregnancy and birth loss.
When did you first WANT to write a book?
I feel like I thought about writing a book a long time ago but wasn’t sure what to write about.
When did you take a step to start writing?
I took a step to start writing a book about breastfeeding in December 2019
How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?
it took almost 3 years to start my book and get it published.
What made you want to write Baby Talk To Me?
Well it certainly wasn’t the book I was planning to write. It was my intention to write a book about the emotions of breastfeeding as so many women struggle with this aspect of breastfeeding and very little is written about it. Having worked in the field of infant feeding for over 20 years, I thought it was time to share what I knew on this topic. I found that as I started to write that information was coming through that were not my words and when I read them back it became clear that it was definitely not a book about breastfeeding.
What were your biggest challenges with writing Baby Talk To Me?
The biggest challenges were finding the time to write as I was working full time, juggling family and life throughout the pandemic and my writing space was in the hub of the house . I also had to work through and overcome a lot of fears about being a midwife and writing about spirituality in a medicalised scientific world.
What was your research process for Baby Talk To Me?
I didn’t do any research to start with I just started writing. Then some of the things that came through i thought that no one would believe me so I added more about my knowledge and experience of working as a midwife. Some of the messages that came through made me think i can’t just say that so I started down a path of seeking for evidence of some of the themes in the book . Then I added 400 references or so.
How did you plan the structure of Baby Talk To Me?
I used a spider graph to start with to list chapter titles and i was clear I wanted some of it written in bold italics but that was it really. As i was bringing it all together, I moved through it in a chronological order.
Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Baby Talk To Me need?
I had an editor with the publishing company I used. I read the book more times than i can count because ultimately the responsibility was with me so the final weeks before the book launch were frustrating. Looking and reading my book on a screen for so long was quite different to holding the book in physical form so it looked different and some sentences needed adapting and changing and grammatical mistakes were picked up. I had underestimated what goes into editing a book.
What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?
Just write! Dont worry about what the end product will be just keep writing and it will all unfold as it is meant to .
Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?
Well its funny you should say that because I wasn’t going to write another one as I had underestimated how much time and effort went into writing and editing a book but i have the first 7 short chapters of a book for fathers. You never know I may get around to writing that breastfeeding book after all!
And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?
I am very proud of my achievement and what I had to overcome to get my book out into the world. Of course now it is over and the book is out Yes it is worth it to have my message out there making a difference to those who read it.
