I interviewed travel journalist Alex Wright about his life and career, what inspired him to write his new book, Eastern Europe Misadventures, and his creative writing process.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

Alex Wright

I am a Copywriter and Journalist, specialising in business, travel and sport.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

I always had a dream of writing my own book and, given my journalist background, I wanted to make the most of my skills.

When did you take a step to start writing?

When I had some down time on holiday in Mauritius.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

I wrote my first book: Every Word Counts – The Easy Way to Win More Customers Online in a couple of months.

How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?

It took me a couple of years on and off in total, writing in the evening and at weekends.

Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write Eastern Europe Misadventures?

I have read many travel books, but I felt there was a gap in the market for a light-hearted eastern Europe travelogue.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Eastern Europe Misadventures?

Remembering everything as accurately as possible as I had only kept a couple of loose diaries of my travels.

What was your research process for Eastern Europe Misadventures?

I consulted the Lonely Planet Eastern Europe and Europe on a Shoestring guides and looked up and double-checked facts online.

How did you plan the structure of Eastern Europe Misadventures

I wrote it chronologically in the form of short stories.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Eastern Europe Misadventures need?

My friend, colleague and renowned journalist Roger Crombie very kindly edited the book for me and, I have to say, did a terrific job. It didn’t need much editing at all, but he picked up on some important points that needed changing.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Develop your ideas as fully as possible, put a clear structure in place and then start writing!

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

I want to write a book about my experience of life as a pupil at an English boarding school in the 1990s.

And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Absolutely, on both counts. But I’m also keen to hear what other people think of it, so please give it a comment, like or share.
