One By One by Adams & Costello

With sounds of blues, americana, and folk, Adams & Costello have released their self-released sophomore album, One By One. Navigating the ways in which the world may knock us down, One By One provides a feeling of catharsis amidst the world’s terrors.

Hot on the heels of previous singles Trouble and Worry About You, the ten track LP sees folk masterminds Julie Adams and Michael Costello employ mellow harmonies that perfectly marry one another to create an excellent listening experience. The album follows their decadent debut, 2018’s Adams & Costello Meet The World.

When putting together the album, Adams & Costello included a notable roster of musicians on the production. In addition to producing and mixing the album, Bret Levick’s groovy bass and keyboards are heard throughout. Same goes with Arty Watson, who’s invigorating drum playing drives each track. Final touches and mastering of the album were done by Jim Chapdelaine (Tori Amos, Dawes, Ani Difranco).

Navigating their way through personal and global hurdles, Adams & Costello perfectly define their dismay with the modern world. The thesis of the album is a simple manifesto – that we are not as defenseless as the events and people who try to oppress us believe we are. Although a lot of the content focuses on heavy subject matter such as raging gun violence, the crises of homelessness, and general heartache, Adams & Costello remain as strong as ever. The album is a testament to not letting the negativity define you, and to keep going amidst all of the struggles we face that make us human.

Sonically, the tracks are feel-good power anthems featuring upbeat drums and ravenous guitar solos that scratch a perfect itch. Though a lot of the subject matter focuses on important societal issues, there are lighthearted moments on tracks such as “Beans and Rice”, which set the tone for a night out celebrating with your honey and your friends.

Adams & Costello

Some songs are about being willing to expose our rough edges and flaws without apologies. The edgy feelings that come from being alive. Some songs are about taking a hard look at what is going on around us. It’s about finding a voice. We chose “One By One” as the album title because it’s the way we had to record the songs due to the pandemic… it’s the way we do life and life’s challenges, one thing at a time.

-Adams & Costello

West Coaster Julie Adams meets Native New Englander Michael Costello in this synergistic guitar and vocal duo. A real life couple whose musical journey commenced after meeting at a Lucinda Williams concert, the pair unite their mutual love for blues rock on their sophomore album One by One.

Adams & Costello

Currently based in Oregon, Adams & Costello record together regularly, offering a unique blend of visceral songwriting and soulful performing. Both grew up cherishing rock, americana, and blues, and have been musically active since they were in grade school.

Prior to forming the duo, Michael Costello played in a band called Razor’s Edge, and his extraordinary guitar playing helped the group open for Jimmy Cliff. Beginning as a long distance couple exchanging creative ideas, Adams & Costello quickly realized that romantic chemistry was not the only thing they shared.

Ultimately, the creative process of Adams & Costello runs primarily on the mutual love and respect the duo have for each other. Combining Costello’s passion for roots music along with Adams’ strong draw to driving rhythms, this pair creates a unique sound that comes alive during their performances. Their captivating sound and onstage swagger turned the heads of two music industry veterans Bret Levick and Jim Chapdelaine, who produced and mastered One by One, respectively. The latter of which mastered tracks for blues-rock staples such as Rickie Lee Jones, The Smithereens, and Cowboy Junkees. Though a great deal of conception for the album came about remotely, the impactful sounds and meanings still hold strong.

Altogether, Adams & Costello have a vibe unlike any other, with Julie Adams captivating vocals emanating the likes of Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, and Stevie Nicks. Meanwhile, Michael Costello’s robust vocals offer a perfect contrast, invoking energies of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Neil Young. Surely, Adams & Costello are bound to become Americana’s next big thing.
