On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Finding Santeria… Losing Sanity is a new thriller book from Mike Beetlestone, taking Irish journalist Ben Molina to the criminal underworld of Cuba.
Mike Beetlestone’s fabulous Finding Santeria… Losing Sanity: A Journey Through Self Discovery To Self-Loathing is the first book in his forthcoming Ben Molina trilogy. Introducing his protagonist, a middle-aged Irish journalist with a predisposition for championing the underdog, Ben finds himself in Cuba and amidst a tale of murder, kidnapping, exoneration from criminality and mental breakdown.
Delivering a fantastic and fast-paced psychological thriller that takes the reader to Madrid, Bolivia and Cuba, the author transports us from the tedium of the here and now into an adventure that would last most mortals a lifetime.
Superbly written and using his knowledge of Cuba to great effect, this novel’s standout is in its journalist protagonist, Ben Molina. Teetering on just this side of PC, Ben’s bodacious adventures find him crossing borders, boundaries and the police.
With two further outings planned– one to Nepal, the other to Massachusetts – our self-effacing journalist with a sharp wit and an eye for love will unquestionably find a place in the hearts of all those that read his seldom-straightforward adventures.
‘Do you know why you are here?’ Ben didn’t, he had been committed to Dundrum Central Mental Hospital for the Criminally Insane because of an unprovoked attack on a stranger in Havana. But he had no recollection of going to Cuba.
Through patient counselling he remembered that he was investigating political corruption in Ireland which led him to Madrid where he met and fell in love with a beautiful and enigmatic woman half his age. Together they travelled to Cuba where they played an unsuspecting part in an incredible plot to honour the memory of Ché Guevara which went horribly wrong.
A roller coaster of an emotional journey finally brings Ben to learn of a dark side to his character he knew nothing about, to self-loathing and eventual breakdown.
“It is a fast-moving novel, covering kidnapping, murder, a love affair, betrayal, political corruption and mental breakdown with a twist at the end that I would defy anyone to predict but remains plausible.”
Mike Beetlestone says:“I was born in Leeds in UK and graduated from Lancaster University with a degree in Mathematics, Economics and Operational Research. After two years working in IBM in London, I met my wife, Maria and we moved to her home town of Dublin where I spent my entire working career in Outdoor Advertising, fourteen years of which were spent developing my own company.
“I retired a few years ago and moved to Gorey some fifty miles south of Dublin. With a keen interest in sport, I still play golf and organise annual cricket tours for Arthurs Knights travelling in recent years to India, Croatia, Malta, Portugal, Spain and Holland. I also have a lifelong devotion to the rollercoaster ride that Leeds United offer their supporters.”
Raising over €30,000 for Temple Street University Children’s Hospital Mike has been on many sponsored walks, including one to Cuba in 2003 which gave him much of the background for the book.
Mike is married with three grown up children – Mark who currently works in Singapore, Gavin who works in Bratislava and Eva who lives in Baldoyle on the northside of Dublin with her partner Rick, and who raises his four grandchildren, Luke, Hannah, Megan and Rebecca.
