On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, new memoir, Treason From Within by Gayle Frances Larkin, is a no holds barred account of living in fear, and then dealing with the murder of her ex-husband.
Treason From Within
Throughout the incredible memoir, Treason From Within by Gayle Frances Larkin, the old adage that you never know what happens behind closed doors rings true. Through her fictionalised characters Ellen and daughter Anne replacing Gayle and her daughter, Gayle shares the fear induced by a psychopathic and misogynistic husband, and the bravery of a woman finally feeling comfortable to share her story.
Describing how she kept herself and her daughter, Anne, safe from her increasingly unstable husband, in Treason From Within, Ellen Phipps shares the story of being married to a sociopathic lawyer. When the police wanted to interview him about a murder, Ellen was terrified as South African laws on marriage prevented her from extricating herself and her daughter safely without his permission.
Shown through actual excerpts culled from some documents, Ellen managed to live an unusual and full life by ensuring that each trap set was avoided.
Learn how the past shaped, even forced, the present as Gayle Frances Larkin leaps over the tangle to reveal the threat and danger that shaped the two protagonists, Ellen, and Anne. In a heart rending tale of sorrow and confusion she infuses humour and heartache.Â
After reading around the issue of psychopathic behaviours, including Paul Babiak’s book, When Psychopaths Go to Work, Gayle has a better understanding of the dynamics of the relationship she endured with her successful lawyer husband. While Treason from Within: A True Story of a Marriage makes for a compelling and disturbing read, it also leaves readers in awe of the bravery and determination of Gayle Larkin to start again.
Using the writing formula of the Brothers Grimm, Larkin repeats elements for dramatic effect and infuses elements of humour as she recounts the hard decisions she had to make, including divorcing as a devout Roman Catholic, and fleeing her home country in order to make a new life here in the UK for her and her daughter.

Whilst I have given different names to myself and my daughter, this is very much our story. Taking place mainly in Johannesburg, I married a student who then became a lawyer, and one day the police came as he was wanted in relation to a murder.
Told by my doctor that due to my husband’s psychopathic and misogynistic tendencies my daughter must never be left alone with him, the decision was made to divorce and we took heed of advice from the police captain and moved to the UK, when he told us that he couldn’t keep us safe following threats that he was going to kill us both.
Following our move to the UK, my ex-husband moved to Cape Town and was later murdered, having received sixteen stab wounds to the chest.
When I was expecting, I trained as a catechist and worked for my local parish in Johannesburg (bookkeeping and teaching catechism) when my daughter was small. Later I worked in accounting firms and multinationals. I also taught at a Roman Catholic seminary for nearly fifteen years whilst also working at multinational company.
My greatest loves are literature, especially Charles Dickens, then law, economics, justice, mercy and my Roman Catholic faith.
