Macpherson masterfully blends historical accuracy with thrilling drama, creating a vivid and immersive world. The novel explores the complexities of court life, where loyalty is often tested, and personal desires clash with political necessity. Catherine’s internal struggle between duty and passion, fueled by her relationships with both Sean and her betrothed, adds a layer of emotional depth that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Having learned of Catherine Douglas when I was aged just ten, her story made an impression that remained with me. It is a story of female courage and sacrifice. It reminds us of traditional female courage – how it is the mother’s instinct to put others before herself and her own safety.

What we have been treated to in modern times are depictions of women who have to take on male qualities to be successful – women like Wonder Woman, Charlie’s Angels or Sigourney Weaver as Ripley from the Alien series.

Catherine takes us back to the traditional female role – she was not as physically strong as the men who attacked the king and could not fight them off so she protected the king in the way that she could, by using her body to bar the door regardless of the consequences for herself.

This story reminds us of the types of sacrifice that people would make because they had no choice – this is real life, not the Hollywood world of unrealistic superheroes. The story honours traditional female values of courage and sacrifice – something that has been forgotten in the modern fashion for women to take on male characteristics.
