A Christmas Carol

With Christmas just around the corner, enjoy an early Christmas gift from Shakespeare North Playhouse with an exclusive sneak peek behind the scenes at rehearsals for A Christmas Carol!

Adapted for the stage by writer Nick Lane, and directed by Ellie Hurt, this production of the Dickens classic is like nothing you’ve never seen before! Nick’s eccentric adaptation has been uniquely transformed for Shakespeare North Playhouse as a fast, furious and whacky musical retelling of the original story, but with a distinctly Prescot feel.

Nick Lane

“The opportunity to write the first Christmas show at the Shakespeare North Playhouse was something I grasped with both hands – and, if my feet had any kind of grip strength I’d have grasped it with them too,” explained A Christmas Carol writer, Nick Lane.

“It’s an amazing theatre in the heart of a town I felt instantly at home in; Prescotians are incredibly welcoming and a number of them really helped me get to know the place. I hope I’ve repaid their time and their care with something delightfully silly, and I look forward to seeing the Cockpit Theatre filled with excited kids – and yes, I’m going to say ‘of all ages’ because when it’s Christmas I’m just as big a kid as any of them!”

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol features a small but mighty quartet of performers, with Zoe West as Scrooge, Jessica Dives as Liza Grub, Abigail Middleton as Clara Winks, and Eddy Westbury as Pod/Marley.

Ebeneezer Scrooge, the meanest man in Prescot, would cancel Christmas if he could until one fateful night when he is given the fright of his life. Three mysterious visitors come to Scrooge to make him see that there is more to life than counting out his pennies.

What follows is a tale of friendship, compassion and humanity that’s jam packed with local references. Described as a wild and bonkers romp, experience the musical nonsense and festive whimsy as the meanest man in Prescot learns to change his ways before it’s too late.

Ellie Hurt

Director Ellie Hurt recently directed Hamlet at the National Theatre, and was the associate director for the musical Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World.

“We’re so excited to bring this brilliant and hilarious version of A Christmas Carol to Shakespeare North Playhouse this Christmas., ” said Ellie of this latest project. “This is Dickens’ classic story like you’ve never seen it before, in an outrageous and silly adaptation by Nick Lane, full to the brim with live music and with the people of Prescot at it’s heart. The resonance of this iconic story feels stronger now than ever, with the ever-growing divide between classes and the living crisis we are facing, the urgency of this story feels more potent than ever before. This is a story with an important message of compassion and humanity, and it’s told through an uplifting and bonkers show with hilarious characters and a whole host of instruments. Let’s celebrate the people of Prescot for this beautiful new theatre’s first Christmas!”

Cockpit Theatre

A Christmas Carol

Creative director of Shakespeare North Playhouse Laura Collier explains, “It’s our first Christmas here at Shakespeare North and I can’t think of a better production to kick off the festive season! Nick and Ellie’s version of A Christmas Carol encapsulates all the magic of Dickens’ beloved classic, but in true Prescot and Shakespeare North Playhouse style, does things a little differently!”
