1. Scream (2022)

Scream (2022) is the fifth installment in the Scream film, which was first released in 1996. Scream is a horror-thriller movie that presents the story of serial killers who wear ghost masks.

Twenty-five years after a series of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new assassin puts on a Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to revive secrets from the city’s deadly past.

2. Insidious Series (2010 – 2021)

Insidious is a 2010 American-Canadian supernatural horror film directed by James Wan, and starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Barbara Hershey. 

It is the first film in the Insidious franchise to center on a couple whose son mysteriously enters a coma, and becomes a medium for various evil entities in the astral dimension.

Insidious first premiered in the theater on September 14, 2010, and was followed by several sequels, namely Chapter 2 (2013), Chapter 3 (2015), and The Last Key (2018).

3. Coraline (2009)

The next best horror film goes to Coraline. This is an animation-based horror film that is popular and interesting and can be watched by all ages. The motion graphics of this movie is memorable that everyone from different ages can enjoy the film.

This film is about a girl named Coraline who has just moved to a new house and accidentally finds another world through a small door. The parallel world takes her to a place similar to her life in the real world but with one sheer difference. 

Although Coraline enjoys the parallel world, there is a terrible mystery and secret that endangers her. This is where the adventure begins.

4. The Conjuring Series (2013 – 2021)

The Conjuring is one of the most popular supernatural horror films of all time. First released in 2013, this film managed to get worldwide attention and now has produced a total of 3 seasons. 

The Conjuring is based on a true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, an exorcist couple. It tells the story of the journey of Ed and Lorraine Warren to fight demons. They use their mystical abilities to investigate mysterious cases in North America.

5. Malignant (2021)

Malignant is the latest horror film directed by a famous director, James Wan. This film tells the story of Madison Mitchell (Annabelle Wallis), who can ‘see’ brutal murders that will occur in the real world.

To stop the murder, Madison must return to her past. The vision that haunts Madison turns out to be related to an imaginary childhood friend.

6. Lights Out (2016)

Lights Out is a 2016 movie directed by David F Sandberg and adapted from a short film of the same name. Lights Out tells the story of a woman named Rebecca who is haunted by a figure who only appears in the dark. 

The story begins when Paul, Rebecca’s father, was killed by a figure whose existence had been complained of by his office employees.

Turns out, the shadow was named Diana, who had been talking to Rebecca’s mother for a long time. He was a close friend of his mother who tragically died and now haunts Rebecca’s family in the dark.

7. Ju-On: The Grudge (2004)

Ju-On: The Grudge is a legendary Japanese horror film. It doesn’t contain much dialogue. However, the movie focuses on an old house that contains mysterious figures. One of them is a creepy little boy named Toshio, who is none other than one of the “residents” in the house.

8. The Shining (1980)

The Shining is a film adaptation by Stephen King that depicts traditional haunted house stories.

What’s great about The Shining is the impressive shooting of its era. The story is about a writer named Jack Torrance who just got a job as a guard at a hotel called Overlook. Jack also brought his wife and child, Danny, to stay at the hotel, which was closed for the winter. 

Danny, who was still small and sensitive, also felt the presence of supernatural powers in the hotel. This coincided with Jack’s mental state, which slowly grew insane and became the start of a nightmare for the Torrance family.

9. The Exorcist (1973)

Last but not least, The Exorcist is a 1973 movie based on a true story. It tells the story of a boy named Robbie who played the Ouija Board to interact with spirits.

After several encounters with spirits through the Ouija Board, he got possessed often. People around him believed he was crazy, not knowing it was the evil spirit’s take all along. 

The news about Robbie had made it to The Washington Post in 1949, making The Exorcist the most popular horror film of all time. This film is also a pioneer of future possessed-themed films, which are now starting to spread.
